Misty's Blog - I'll be back

Hi everyone!

Thank you so much for all of your support. I am resting back at home now after a successful surgery. I had both a good thing happen last week and a bad, but life is always full of surprises. The good thing that happened was my husband Matt came back to California after his surgery and his baseball season ended. We had seen each other less than 24 hours in over two months, so it is a relief to be reunited with him. The bad thing is obviously my dancing season cut short. It is sad that I wont be able to continue to show not only my fans but the rest of America my improvement out on the dance floor. This Monday would have marked the first time for Matt to watch me and Maksim dance live, I was so excited. We had worked so hard on the Jive and this might have been a break through performance for me. Oh well, next time.

We don’t know why things happen the way they do, but you must pick up the pieces and continue building the puzzle. Even though this has sidelined me from dancing for a while, I am relieved that this injury didn’t affect team May/Walsh’s chances at capturing that second gold. I just want to thank all of my fans for all of their continued support, my friends and family (EVERYONE I love you), the May-Niacs, the AVP, all of my sponsors, my management firm (the Wasserman Media Group), my doctor (Dr. Schobert), all the ABC family, my new friends and castmates from DWTS, Maksim, and of course my 4-legged babies (Boogie and Gruden).

This marks only the beginning of a new journey for everyone to follow me on. It marks the beginning but not the end. I plan on working my hardest to come back stronger than ever so that I may make a full recovery for both getting back on the court and on the dance floor. So everyone don’t worry! From the words of Arnold…......I’LL BE BACK!!!!

Yes, I’m interested in updates!

For those that have ruptured achilles, like myself playing soccer a few years
ago. The frequency of this injury seems unusually high. I am now understanding that certain antibiotics such as Cipro (Quinalones) used for bladder infections, can soften or weaken tendons. I would be interested to know if you had used any of these antibiotics within the previous month of your injury?

MY experience was one of the most painful of my life, and am really curious
WHY this particular injury is on the rise.

Hi Misty just wanted to say hi again. Christi tells me you are doing well. I am so glad. So many people at my church have asked about you. Now i have something to tell them. Say hi to Matt and hope to see you soon.
Love Karen

I also ruptured my achilles tendon dancing, at xmas party where I started out wearing great high heels but then took them off to dance barefoot on a table , when I jumped off the table and started walking away, it felt like someone kicked me in the calf…..it is so frustrating as I had been working out for months and was in the best physical shape I had been in years. Many say that transition from high heels to flat feet is the cause???
My best advice to you now is make sure you have a good rehab physio on board now, I was left in a cast for 8 weeks which causes too much atrophy to the calf muscle and it took over a year to even walk properly….all the research now shows taking that cast off much earlier 2-3 weeks.
Good luck to you and we will be watching for your return to the dance floor!

Just a note to Misty May. During the Olympics this summer I was recovering from surgery on MY ruptured achilles tendon. Like you, it was a freak accident, on the tennis court, the loud pop, the drop to my knees etc. Four days later I had the surgery and was delighted to have the olympics on tv to keep me entertained. Your beach volleyball was amazing to watch and it helped me remember that I’ll get back from this injury as I did my ACL five years earlier which I’d torn skiing. I had gone back to skiing and all my other activities. So now I’m three months post-op, recovering slower than I’d like but I’m a very impatient person. I will be back as you will! Chin up. It does seem like a perfect time to make a baby! Well timed! Best of luck to you in your recovery and “other endeavors.”

Amy | on 29/10/08

Misty…you are in my thoughts for a full recovery! Take it easy, don’t try to get back at it too soon. Enjoy some time off with your husband, there’s no doubt you both deserve that:) I wish you well and can’t wait to see you back…on the floor and more importantly, on the court!!

Get well soon!!

Travis Greene | on 24/10/08

Glad to hear that you are doing well!!! You are missed on DWTS, I was sure that you and Maks were going to take the mirror ball trophy this season. Hopefully, we will see you on the show againl Best of Luck!!!

Tony Marfil | on 23/10/08

Hi there Misty..Sorry about your injury. I think it means that you need a break or body does. Congratulations on winning the Gold with Kerry in The Olympics. We all know you will come back stronger and faster..kinda like the Bionic Woman. Misty get some rest, heal and enjoy your time with your hubby. When you are good and ready come out with a BIG BANG...Take care and god bless you. Love You!!!!!

Greg | on 21/10/08

I hope healing at home affords you more time for your marriage. I lost my marriage not long ago. Other than God, nothing is more important than your marriage so I hope you can seize this time for that and make the very most of it. Chasing balls and getting attention from fans is so much less important. God bless.

Amy | on 21/10/08

Hey Misty, my name is Amy and i want you to know that im a huge fan of yours, and you WILL make a full recovery. I miss you on DWTS but the most important thing for you to do is to get well and take care of yourself. You are a inspiration to every woman/girl out there in the world and you are one of my hero’s. May God bless you and your hubby Matt.
PHILIPPIANS 4:13 says
“I can do ALL things through CHRIST who strengthens me”
much love to you

Nan Schooley | on 20/10/08

Misty,

So sorry about your serious injury. Hope you can settle in and enjoy some quiet time while you heal. I loved watching you in SB in Sept and on DWTS and especially wilnning the Gold for all of us!

Much love and healing to you!

Nan

Darren | on 20/10/08

Misty,

Life gets better. It does. At 13 weeks you will see normal life getting back to normal. At weeks 6-7 you should be in the walking cast and not have those crutches anymore. Physio is the key. You will be spiking that ball again at the beach and loving life. You will be fine. For now, relax, keep that leg up, and thank the significant others who are taking care of you. Make sure you do your physio homework when that begins. Try to get your foot in the 0 degree angle (or close to it) during one of your initial cast changes and remember, your tendon is now connected. Don’t forget that part!!

If you have questions, don’t be afraid to ask. Good luck.

Darre

P.S. I think I can take you in Volleyball…..

Kit (Swanson) Williams | on 19/10/08

Misty,
As a 61 year old, I’m not your average fan, but because you and my son, Jake (Swanson) were on the track team together, we went to the NHHS volleyball games specifically to watch your amazing talent. Then when you and Kerri became partners, Jake had another connection: At Cal Poly SLO he roomed with Jason Williams, a good friend of Kerri’s brother, Marte. And the connection continues…Jake’s dad worked alongside Matt’s dad at the Costa Mesa Fire Department, Jake worked with Casey (Jennings ) for a while at one of the Newport Spaghetti restaurants (I don’t know if it was Bender or Factory), and I worked at Carden Hall for years, and Matt Fuerbringer was a student there. So, needless to say, I watched the Olympics like you were a good friend, (and being in Ohio, I was lucky enough to see several of them live), and was tickled to see your progress on DWTS. None of us knows why things happen the way they do, but I’m sure you will make a speedy recovery. (Jake assures me that someone in your shape and with your drive will do just fine – he’s in the health and wellness field now. ) Here’s to more volleyball, more dancing (I DO want to see that Jive), and most of all, success in starting the May-Treanor family!
Fondly,
Kit (Swanson) Williams

I have watched you play volleyball ever since you were in college right up through the AVP tournaments and you are TRULY AWESOME!!!!!!

I pray that you will make a great recovery adn don’t worry we know you will continue to rock the AVP tour and any other volleyball tourneys, as well as the dance floor.

Good luck with rehab and if you need more advice don’t hesitate to contact me (i’m a PT in NY)...

God bless!!!

Hey Misty

I used to look up to you and watch you play volleyball at Newport Harbor High School when I was in Jr High. Ive been following your career and success ever since.

Hang in there through your recovery!! We cant wait till youre healthy and back in action.

Much Love, Alyssa

Anita Sasser | on 14/10/08

Misty — would love to hear how you are doing after the first week of surgery. I know you have gotten a lot of email from other people recovering from the same injury. I too am recovering. I am in month four. I have one suggestion…ask for a Wound Vac. It is a wonderful device that I wish my surgeon had thought of when I first had surgery. Unfortunately, my wound did not heal correctly the first time and I had to have a second surgery 10 weeks after the first. It would have been avoided if I had known about the Wound Vac. We missed you last night on Dancing. Good luck on your recovery.

Tammy G. | on 14/10/08

So glad to hear that you are feeling well. Our family has been watching all of your accomplishments (Olympic & Dancing) with great joy. You have been an inspiration to my 2 girls – ages 10 & 5. They are both very active in sports and watching the determination you have to come back better has left a lasting impression. Thank you for being such a positive role model. We will keep an eye out for your return!!!

Dottie | on 14/10/08

I am so happy to hear that this injury will NOT affect your volleyball carreer. I have watched both you & Kerri for some time now and really enjoy watching the game you play. I am sure you will make a complete recovery just as Kerri has done with her shoulder. I am looking forward to seeing ou both on the volleyball court and the dance floor again. Please, stay Happy, Healthy & Safe.

Dottie

Kristina | on 14/10/08

Thank goodness you are doing well!! I’m sure you will come back and surprise us all!!! Good luck to you Misty May!!!!

Joanne | on 14/10/08

Glad to hear you are on your way to a full recovery. We missed you last night as Dancing will not be the same. You got our votes! Speedy recovery and may you and your hubby take the time to have the family you have talked about having. Good Luck.

Robert | on 14/10/08

Misty ~at 46 I completly ruptured my tendon playing goal during an indoor soccer game. I had surgery and I am back on the field after only 7 1/2 months and currently undefeated at 4-0. If an ole guy like me can do it so can you. Good luck and keep the faith.,...Oh and congrats on the second GOLD ~~~

Jacqueline Sakadjian | on 13/10/08

Misty….Wow I was so sad to hear that you were out of the Dancing with the Stars contest… You were the best one to have the chance to WIN.. but I hope your are surgery went well and you are recooperating. This means you will not make it out to our event for my firm. I had sent you a letter with some info, but not sure if you received it. By all means get well soon!! You are a true example of a hardworking individual!!!

:)

Melissa Delfino | on 13/10/08

I ruptured my Achilles Tendon 8 weeks ago. I am a 39 year old mother of three, physical education teacher, competitive runner and a former competitive gymnast. I couldn’t believe I could ever get hurt like this. I blew mine out doing a round-off-rebound jump on a football field ( showing off), Everyone around me heard the “gun-shot”. I must have been in shock because I told everyone I was alright. I hopped over to the trainer to get ice, stayed for the game and then hopped to my car (I ruptured my left leg) and drove to my brother’s house (he is a physician assistant) He told me he thought it was ruptured, which was confirmed by an Ortho a few days later. I had surgery 7 weeks ago and the only day of work I missed was the day of my surgery. I taught my gym classes from a desk chair with wheels (no joke). My cast has been off for a week and I am very aggressive with my therapy. I am motivated to start running again, but for now I will be happy just to walk. Oh how we take the simple things in life for granted. Good Luck with your recovery.

Len | on 13/10/08

Hi Misty,

My thoughts and prayers are with you for a speedy recovery. I sustained the same injury 3 months ago in a soccer game and I am in the healing process.

The injury takes times to heal, more than I would have expected; however, once healed, there’s a 99% chance it can’t happen again.

During all the recovery time at home there’s an opportunity to spend quality time with family and to watch television.

Take care,

Len

Micki Rush | on 13/10/08

Misty,
I’m glad your surgery went well, I’m hoping you have a speedy recovery. Although I enjoyed you entertaining us on DWTS, I’m looking forward to you and Keri getting back in the sand. Take care and be strong.

Alanna Perez | on 13/10/08

Misty May you are my hero. It amazed me on how positive you are no matter what life throws at you. You inspire me to not only be a better volleyball player, but to be a better person. I enjoyed watching your enthusiasm not only on the volleyball court during the Olympics (congrats on the gold medal by the way) but on the dance floor too. And your instructional videos really did help my volleyball game too! I wish you a very speedy recovery and success in everything that you do!

teresa | on 13/10/08

Misty I am sure you will make a full recovery from your injuries as you are so strong physically, metally and spiritually. Your kindness to others has been well documented, but its time to take care of yourself and your family. Maybe this injury occured to give you some much neede time with Matt. I know you both are very sopportive of each other but Iwould hate to see you both lose each other due to lack of time like so many other couples. Dont worry about your fans we will be here for you just like you have been here for us.Much love to you and your family. tree.

Bryant Dunetz | on 13/10/08

Dear Misty:

From the more than 700 womens volleyball teams participating in Dig Pink during October we wish you a speedy recovery.

teresa | on 12/10/08

Misty I have no doubt you will come back from this injury. You are so strong physically, mentally and more important spiritually. Your kindness to others has been so incredible and what a blessing to have such a good role model for children. You should not worry about disappointing your fans, you should just take time for yourself and your husband Matt. Maybe this happened so you could slow down and spend some much neede quality time with Matt. Look how many marriages have broken apart because of couples not spending time together. I know you both support each other in your careers but you are both afterall only humans. Anyway I hope you both can at least enjoy some time together. If a baby is still in the plans maybe this is a good time to think about that. I hope you and Kerri have talked,I heard she and Nichole took a gold over seas. Im sure your happy for them.Anyway take some time for you and Matt anddont worry about us we will be here for you just like you have always been here for us . Much love to you and your family . Tree.

Just wanted to wish you well on your recovery. I’ve loved watching you on the beach as well as the dancefloor, and will miss you until you’re 100% again. Keep your beautiful attitude (it goes with the rest of you so nicely) and enjoy the time you’ll get to spend with Matt! Good luck, and God bless.

Nikki S. | on 12/10/08

I’m a vball player too, and I’m 5 months out from achilles tendon repair surgery. I literally felt your pain watching your injury, but I’m sure you will be just fine! Look for the little milestones, partial weight-bearing, then full weight-bearing….you’ll be back on the sand before you know it. Until then, accept help as much as you need (you only get one chance to heal correctly), and an office chair on wheels is great for getting around when you need to use your hands! :) Best wishes on your recovery. — Nikki

Mick | on 11/10/08

Hi Misty, I cringed when I heard about your injury – that Achilles is one sensitive area. I guess it is kind of odd that your Achilles heel in this competition turned out to be your actual Achilles heel. Well, here’s wishing your Achilles heals as quickly as possible, so you can get back out on the v-ball circuit ASAP. I’m a little bummed though, now that DWTS has undergone this Misty-ectomy, I anticipate a precipitous drop in ratings for the show. I mean, who are we supposed to root for now? Lance Bass? “Bass, Jerry, instead of salmon, he went with Bass; he just traded one fish for the other.” All the best Misty. Get well.

Rob, Vlad and Jeff DC | on 11/10/08

Good luck and a speedy recovery Misty!!!!

See you on the beach next summer.

Brenda Payne | on 11/10/08

Misty,

I too ruptured my achilles playing tennis back in late March of this year. I played my first tennis match since the injury five months to the day. I’m very happy to be back! It’s a tough injury, but perservere, and you’ll be back better than ever! Good Luck and God Bless!

lee | on 11/10/08

Misty, It seems that the videos of your dances on DTWS have been removed. Even though you are not able to compete, I enjoyed watching your dancing. There are still dances of other seasons available for viewing. If we can’t watch you dance the rest
of the season, we should still be able to watch the dances you did. You and Max were good. Hope you are doing well. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. Lee

Kristina O'Keefe | on 11/10/08

I have a PCL injury and i hear on dancing with the stars that you did too. I am also a volleyball player. I am a middle hitter on my high school team and I need a pcl reconstruction. How long did it take you to recover? PLEASE EMAIL ME BACK! PLEASE! I need some certainty on this. I don’t feel very certain about my recovery. PLEASE HELP ME!

Karen | on 11/10/08

So glad to hear that your surgery was a success and that you’re doing well. It was so sad to see you leave the competition, but with your great attitude and determination, I know you’ll be back stronger than ever. All the best to you as you recover!

melissa | on 11/10/08

Misty,
I was so sad for you when I tuned into DWTS this past Monday and learned that you ruptured your achilles tendon! I became a beach volleyball fan after having the opportunity to work two AVP tournaments during the 1990’s in Grand Haven, MI as a Certified Athletic Trainer. I was so glad to read on Tuesday that your surgery was a sucess and am taking the time today to send well wishes for a sucessful rehab and complete recovery! Also, I look forward to future updates on your progress and really admire the hard work and patience it takes to recover from an injury of this nature! Good luck ! Sincerely Melissa

Congrats on yours and Kerri’s gold medal at the Olympics. Take it easy and get well soon. Can’t wait to see you playing beach volleyball and dancing again. Marianne | on 10/10/08

Hi Misty,
I can so relate to your pain since i am writing to you 18 weeks post-op from a right ATR.....same pop sound and wondered what hit the back of my ankle….I am 50 yrs. old and not athletic, so I am taking this opportunity, with all my Physical Therapy, to get back in shape :) I am part of achillesblog.com that Dennis mentioned in his post to you….we are a supportive community of 211 ATR’s :) The site has helped me keep my sanity…..I hope you received the ATR t-shirt our group sent you…..This is definitely an injury that will try your patience, but with the time off you had planned taking, this is the best timing (if there is any good time for this type of injury). Rest, and relax and let all those around you help you out…..You deserve it….
Happy Healing and best of luck with your recovery…..you are not alone!!!!!!

anne marie | on 10/10/08

I survived achilles rupture too !!! I was 29 and a personal trainer…I lunged off a trampoline and POW !!!! that was Dec 2000.. it was long recovery ...this will test your patience but it really is better than ever.. the 20 LBS overweight I am now is from having my 2 precious girls…stay well !

Betty | on 10/10/08

I hope and pray that your achilles tendon mends well and you are back on the sand when the time is right. I also have a ruptured AT. Have not had surgery yet and am really scared about it. Hope you are 100% when you are healed. Can’t wait to see you play back on the beach. God bless you.

Mary | on 10/10/08

Misty, so sorry to hear about your accident/surgery. Ive had so many surgeries in the past 7 yrs. I know what its like..sigh… I was voting for you ALOT . I think you and Maksim were the best. I hope someday they will let you come back. Congrats on your Olympic win. My sons and I were on the edge of our seats until you won. You are a VERY talented woman. You have been blessed big time. I will be praying for your recovery and your hubbys. Lots of luck to you!

Mary

Isabel Addison | on 10/10/08

Hi Misty, I am a big fan of DWTS and this season I was rooting for you and Max. I can fully sympathise with you as in 2001 I too ruptured my achilles tendon whist dancing, not nearly as good as you!!!! If I was to offer any advice it is this. Once you get the plaster off and the physio starts stick with it. It is agony to start with, but it is the most important part of your recovery. I wish you well and hope that you have a speedy recovery. I look forward to seeing you jive in the next season of DWTS. Good luck, with love Isabel x

larry barr | on 10/10/08

Misty,
You’re an inspiration to many, including myself. As an avid volleyball player and fan I was able to convince many people who had never watched volleyball on TV to tune in these past few months because of your outstanding play. Likewise, I was able to convince many of my volleyball fans to tune in to Dancing with the Stars because we all wanted to cheer you on and vote for you. Now, you have many of these volleyball players interested in taking dance lessons.
Enjoy your time with Matt and I look forward to the next time I get to see you out on the court or the dance floor. With that said, I wish you the speediest and healthiest recovery possible. If anyone can do it, you can!

Pete | on 10/10/08

I can’t tell you how painful it was to watch the video of your injury having ruptured both of my own Achilles on separate occasions. I’m sure you’re in excellent hands and will make a full recovery!

Ruthann Watts | on 10/10/08

Enjoyed you on DWTS and used all my votes for you. You were elegant! So sorry for your injury. Also was glued to TV during Olympics watching your team win. I was laid up with a total knee replacement so your efforts really gave me energy. Hope all turns out well and good luck.

Patti | on 10/10/08

Hey Misty….

Glad to hear that your surgury went well and your on your way to a full recovery…I didn’t really have any doubts….As Walshy says..“Your a STUD”!!

Can’t wait to see you back on the beach & on the dance floor in the future…Take your time…The Golden Girls fans are patient….

Love ya Girl!!!

I was so sad about your injury. I am a huge fan of may/walsh. I was voting for you every week on dancing with the stars – you’re a very cool person and i cant wait for you to recover and hit the court!! Best of luck !!

Pam Ferguson | on 9/10/08

There is a degree of separation between individuals. Here are ours: I went to Newport Harbor (many years ago), my cousin married Holly McPeak’s father, my daughter was a setter with Elaine Youngs at El Toro High School and my husband who rutured his Achille Tendon had surgery on the same day you did, but at the Laguna Hills office. Did you happen to play of Charlie Brand at Newport? My son did. Good luck with your recovery!

Pam

Michelle | on 9/10/08

Glad all is well and knowing you, the hard part will be sitting still! All my best in your recovery and rehab. Can’t wait to see you hit the sand and the dance floor again – they better invite you back for next season. All my best and Colorado is cheering you on in any arena you decide to be in!

Lily | on 9/10/08

Hi again. I’m the one with the brother who tore his acl and asked if ou would come to his after surgery party on Saturday, october 11th. I just didn’t know if you got my question or not. If you don’t come it’s alright because I know your busy and all. Anyway I wanted to say that I play volleyball at Woodlan (where Lloy Ball used to go) and I look up to you very much. Your an awesome role model. I love volleybal and I love dancing!!!

Stella | on 9/10/08

Misty, I hope and pray that you get well soon, especially paying volleyball. You are the best.

Vanessa Collins | on 9/10/08

Omg Misty, I feel terrible that this had to happen to you! I idolize you and kerry, and you two are my inspirations to give it my all out on the volleyball court. When I heard about this, I was devastated. I can’t even imagine how you must feel. I was really upset originally when I found out you may not compete in the 2012 Olympics, because it won’t be the same to watch without the May/Walsh team out there to dominate on the sand! I play volleyball as well, and I know how you feel. I hope to make it to the olympics one day, and watching you two play makes me want to succeed even more! I hope to see you back and better then ever soon! (Even though your already amazing). Feel better soon, and I hope to see you out on the court with Kerry winning another gold in England!!!!

Karen aka Chrissti's mom | on 9/10/08

Hi Misty good to see that you had your operation. Now its my turn to stock you. Just wanted to let you know that the only time i ever voted was for you. My mother Christi’s grandma had to tell me how to do it and now i am a pro. Glad to see that Matt was at your last Dancing with the Stars and that you guys get to be together. Hope to see you soon and I pray for a speedy recovery. Say hi to Matt and we tried to see him on the tv this year. Even my foster child Kim was watching you and calling me every time something happened. Take care, love Karen

Kevin Kitzberger | on 9/10/08

Misty, I hope you get better soon. I was shocked to hear of your injury. My prayers are with you on a speedy recovery. I’ve been a fan for years and look forward to watching you and Kerri play again. Get well, enjoy your time with Matt. You have without a doubt earned it. Take Care!

I was so sorry about your injury and am very relieved to find out that it is not permanent. I know you’ll work hard and get back on the court and the floor and I look forward to routing for you on both arenas! Speedy recovery and best wishes to a true athlete.

Hi Misty,
I became a HUGE fan of yours while watching this summer’s Olympics. Even my wife knows that I have a “crush” on you, and she thinks you’re adorable too! I don’t usually watch DWTS but I have been this time, because you are in it.

Just last night I got to watch Monday’s show (I had to TVO it). I was positively heartbreaking to see your injury. I will really miss watching you the rest of the way. I wish you the best at recovering from your surgery, and may you and Mark make several beautiful babies together!

Your fan,
Patrick

Hello Misty,

I completely ruputured my achilles tendon 5 weeks ago! I can’t believe it happened to you! I love you on Dancing with the Stars and watched every volley ball game you played this summer. All the best with your rehab!

Sarah | on 9/10/08

After hearing about your injury, I felt so sorry that I cried for hours. I keep you in my prayers until you’re fully healed. Get well soon!

Lindsay B | on 9/10/08

I am so glad to hear that you had a successful surgery. I was so happy when I heard you were going to be on Dancing, and with my fav dancer as well-Maks! That was so sweet of him to dedicate the jive for you on Tuesday=) You were doing a great job and I cant wait to see you back on the dancefloor and sand when you recover. Best wishes and hope to meet you one day.
Lindsay

MJ and Nancy | on 9/10/08

Misty,
Glad to hear that the surgery went well. We’re sorry we’re a little late but wanted to send you our warmest wishes for a speedy recovery. If anyone bounces from an injury better than before, it would be you.

You did great on DWTS and you are already a champion in our hearts:)

Carla | on 9/10/08

I am so sad and bummed. if it wasn’t for Warren, who I gave three of my votes to, I wouldn’t even watch the show. i was Misty all the way. You started good and were getting even better. Good luck with your rehab. i have had a hard time losing weight even though I work out hard with a crazy trainer. But seeing your physique (and that back!) motivates me to be consistent in the gym. How do you stay in such shape!?

Not gonna be the same without you! Be well. Happy baby-making. Carla

Sondra | on 9/10/08

Misty,
I met you when you threw out the first ball at the Diamondback game. I was with Komen for the Cure. You were so kind to sign some of our Race posters for us and let us have our pictures taken with you. So thank you for your kindness that day!!
I wish you a speedy recovery and looking forward to watching you play in the next Olympics.
Sondra

Mike Andrew | on 9/10/08

Misty,
I dont know if you will get this, but wanted you to know my thoughts and prayers have been and are with you. My 9 year old son and I (I am a single dad) were pulling for you every week on the show! I have never been interested in the show, but when I saw you were scheduled to compete, that changed! We both were very sad what happened, but like you said, sometimes we cant explain why things happen. I wish you the best always, and will continue to follow you on the court as well! We got tickets to a Omaha show in Jan, hope you are there! Would love to get an autograph some day! My son and I are such huge fans! You are just to cool!!!!

Mike

Hey Misty. I was pretty upset to see what happened to you on dancing. Everytime they would show clips it made me want to cry. I would be on nightly voting for you each time that the show was on…Anyway due to what happened I wrote a poem for you. I hope that you enjoy it!

Misty is how my eyes were when you were hurt,
you could see this from the few tears on my shirt.
May is the month in which I was born,
oh how your pain had left a lot of us torn.
Treanor is a different spelling of what Maks was to you,
you both were great in each dance you’d do.
You had won the gold in August of 08,
and on Dancing with the Stars I thought you were great.
I watched every episode from the moment it began,
and If I could I would do it over and over again.
Even you left I think you are oh so strong,
to not have voted for you would have been wrong.
I can’t wait for the day you are well again,
so that a brand new and exciting journey can begin.

Becky | on 8/10/08

Misty,
I am so impressed and moved by your positive attitude and optimism with this injury. It really speaks to your character and what a strong person you are.
I am a physical therapist and can appreciate the rehab you are looking at in the future and I am confident with your wonderful attitude and work ethic that you will recover fully.
You are a great role model and inspiration to kids in a time where it is hard to find people in the spotlight that deserve admiration.
I am looking forward to seeing you and Kerri in the London and winning your 3rd Gold Medal.

You and your family and friends will be in my prayers. Hang in there and keep up that great attitude.

Becky

Melissa Jones | on 8/10/08

Misty-
I have seen you play at 3 AVP events between your 1st and 2nd gold. I have met you briefly (twice for autographs) and even though your focus was volleyball you always made your fans a priority!! I thought that was incredibly cool. You seem like a “real” person. That’s why it was so exciting to see you on DWTS, and see you as a person. Again – amazing!! You are so focused on your goal, and I am so very sorry you were prevented from realizing this goal. Hopefully you can spend some much deserved QT w/ your hubby. Hope you are not in much pain, and know that all your fans are rooting for your return to the sand where you and Keri can begin another record breaking winning streak(s)!!
Good luck Misty!
Melissa

Katie Bradley | on 8/10/08

Hello Misty,
I just want to say that I hope you get better soon. My sister and I have watched you play in two AVP tournaments (Long Beach and Manhattan Beach) while doing stats for the AVP and we love you and Kerri. I love how you think about the positive from your injury and not the negative. You are such a wonderful role model. When I was a freshman, I broke my wrist during practice and was out for the season. Instead of quitting though, I encouraged my teammates and played club that year to improve and play the next season. I look up to you in so many ways. Thank You for being such a great role model for me and the rest of the world. Get better SOON!!
-Katie Bradley, 16

Luis Acevedo | on 8/10/08

Hope to see you soon again on TV.

Hi Misty,
Hey girl i’m so sad and sorry this happened to you! Im a dancer and did the same thing. just took a weird step. Its a little crazy, im a retired radio city rockette and they were on the show the same week this happened to you. I saw the video of it happening to you. I cried then wanted to throw up. That feeling is the worst! You go to take a step and there is nothing there to hold you up! I just wanted you to know I was dancing again 4 months after my surgery. Not 100% but still dancing!!! my surgon and p.t. were amazing! Your youg and in great shape so you will heal much faster! Something a little funny, you know when old people say” I feel it. Its going to rain.” lol. Its always going to be a little tight when it rains or snows. I wish you the best and a fast recovery! Try to stay as positive as you can. I know it will be so frustrating because your so active!!! something good always comes from something bad. keep your chin up girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brenda Ferguson | on 8/10/08

I wish you all the best. I am following your journal and awaiting my surgery for tendon repair. I twisted my leg 7 weeks ago and have been in a cast and crutches but now surgery. We were in hopes that it would heal without surgery but at 50 plus age, we don’t bounce back like the 15 year olds. You were doing so well in the Dancing and you are beautiful and it comes from within. May God Bless you and your husband and your pain turn to lots of time spent together with good health in the near future. Brenda

Brenda Blattenberger | on 8/10/08

Hi Misty !

Sending you get well wishes ,and prayers for a speedy recovery. No doubt about it you’ll be back on the sand, and dancing, in no time. I admire your strength and resiliency. You are truly one of the best athletes to ever hit the sand ! I watched in awe as you and Kerri took the gold in August. Couldn’t have been prouder !!!

And I have to say Misty, without question you were a very strong contender to win Dancing with the Stars.. You were really good. You had my vote.

Get well soon Misty.

Much respect,
Brenda

Jenn Patrick | on 8/10/08

Hoping you recover quickly! You were great to watch – and it’s a bummer your time was cut short – you were definately in the running!!
Good Luck & God Bless!

Hi Misty,

My son and me we’re huge fans of you and Kerry, we try to watch every game of the season and we’re very sorry for you injury, Wish you the best!!! Get well soon!!!

Debbiy Riegle | on 8/10/08

I just experienced a rupture Achilles 8 weeks ago and I wanted to cheer you up a little. First off you will bounce back :) I’ve been an athlete all my life and this shocked me when it happened. My Doc and Physical Therapist are blown away with how fast I’m healing. After reading your comments, you have the same attitude I did, I remember in the Emergency room when the Dr. told me what happened and all I could think of was thank God he isn’t telling me I have cancer. Just keep the attitude that this takes awhile and really listen to your Dr. The rate I’m going I will be hiking soon, rock climbing will be in about two months and I’ll be able to ski all season. Your strong and don’t get frustrated, it is only a short time in your lifetime and as long as you listen to your Dr. you should be back to normal and winning more golds:)

Kimberly | on 8/10/08

Just want to wish you well in your recovery! You inspired me each week I watched you on DWTS and it was such a pleasure to see such a fantastic female athlete out there on the floor. You were one of the reasons I am watching the show this season, as I have not in seasons past. I hope you’ll pop by on the sidelines in the weeks to come. Take care of yourself!

Megan | on 8/10/08

I know excatly what you are going through. I broke the growth-plate in my ankle 4weeks ago. I was in a full leg cast till today. I am a die heart soccer player and I love to dance too. I am also only 14 years old. I only have 3 more weeks with a short cast. But unlike you I didn’t need any surgery. It’s sad to see such a good player to down. I wamted to see you and Maksim make it to the Champinship amd win. You are my true hero, and I hope you feel better! Make a fast recovery and you will come back stronger than ever!

Kate | on 8/10/08

Lynda Higgins | on 8/10/08

I didn’t see this section yesterday and entered some ideas (in the questions section ) that worked for me when I had this same injury almost 2 years ago. I know that you must have a wonderful support system but if you ever have a question that only someone who has experienced this frustrating and painful injury can answer I would be happy to help. I am so sorry that this has happened to you however your attitude will pull you throw and make you stronger. Good Luck in the healing and recovery process.

Sincerely.

Amy | on 8/10/08

Wishing you a speedy and full recovery! My 5 year old son, who adores you, was sad to hear that you wouldn’t be able to dance the rest of the season.

Leslie | on 8/10/08

While I was watching DWTS on Monday, I really felt your pain. I know you were in physical pain with your injury, but I was cryng on the couch for you with the emotional pain you were trying not to show with your brave face and words of enouragement. I was not a HUGE sand volleyball fan because I really hate sand in my toes, but this year during the Olymics I saw the phenominal teamwork you and Kerri have, and was inspired by the both of you. (I used you both as an example to my officers) I was looking forward to DWTS to see how you would transition your fighting spirit to the dance floor and was amazed and proud of you. The more I learn about you the more honored I am to see what a positive and inspirational role model you are in this hard world. Please take this time to mend and know that you have people who will be praying for you. When you get back on the volleyball circuit, I will make the effort to deal with the sand and come see you win another title. Keep the faith and God Bless!!!!

Natalie | on 8/10/08

Oops.. I meant Sept 19th 2007!

Natalie | on 8/10/08

Misty,

Get well soon! I’ve been thinking about you. I ruptured my right achilles Sept. 19th 2008 playing tennis and not to scare you but re-ruptured it again only 8 weeks after my first surgery while in my walking boot. My second surgery was major but it’s been almost 11 months and I feel great! I also learned alot about myself going through the ordeal. My hopes are you come back stronger than before! Good luck and best wishes!

lacey | on 8/10/08

I am glad to hear that your back home. My family has been watching you over the years play vollyball and then dancing with the stars. You have so much talent but not only do you have talent you have a great attitude. We are praying for you, Continue to heal. On the bright side you get to spend time with your husband now.

I became interested in beach volleyball after sseing you in the Olympics. Hope to see you back to play. I am a retired teacher and principal. With chronic knee pain after 2 replacements and a revision, I watch tv often. Also I edit work fgor former students. I hope you plan to write your bio. You are blessed and the world is better because of you. You are an inspiration. How can I get a schedule for beach volley ball?

You exude love, and so it comes back to you in droves. May that always be true.

Dennie Wallace | on 8/10/08

It broke my heart that you weren’t going to be on Dancing With The Stars for the rest of this session. That video of your accident was devastating…..and I can imagine how it felt to you. I’m happy to hear the surgery went well and I wish you a fast recovery and I know we will see you playing volley ball next season and maybe even dancing. You are a very good dancer…...
Take care,
You are in my prayers.

Hi, Misty. Wishing you a speedy recovery so you can pursue all your dancing dreams. It was fun watching your drive and determination on DWTS. You could really keep up with Maksim, too! Also, thank you for representing the US so wonderfully at the Olympics. Best wishes to you and your husband,
Teresa

Cathy Parisi | on 8/10/08

Hi Misty, so sorry about your injury, who am I going to vote for now on DWTS?! Glad to hear your surgery went well. Hope you’ll still get a chance to go on the AVP tour. I got tickets for my husband as anniversary gift for Feb. 09 in Cleveland. We thoroughly enjoyed watching ALL of your matches at during the Olympics. WOO-HOO for the GOLD!! :)
Take care!

Clara | on 8/10/08

Wow Misty. You’ve made me cry three times. First in 2004 when you and Kerri won gold at the olympics. Again when you repeated, and Monday night when you said it was over. I don’t remember everything you said I was crying to hard. Sometimes life can seem so unfair. But you’re the greatest fighter I have ever seen, truly “angelic”. The world needs more Misty’s. My prayers go out to you. I hope you get to come back to DWTS, not just to dance your jive but to compete. You and Maksim have some unfinished business to attend to.

Ardy | on 8/10/08

Hey Misty,

I unfortunately sufferd the same injury as you did 10 days ago playing soccer, A real shock for me. I had my surgery as well. When you came on to D W the Stars with your cast I said to my wife that cast looks familiar!
Your leg will be sore for a few days. Get well!
Take it easy on the crutches.
Cheers, Ardy

Mark | on 8/10/08

TAKE A REST. You’ve earned it. Enjoy the holidays and get well soon. Thank you for the stellar representation of US athletes on the world stage. Congratulations on the records and professional success. Thank you for being an athlete worthy of being a role model to youth (a rare thing these days). I voted for you on DWTS, I’m sorry to see you go. I wish you luck and happiness in the future.

mike | on 8/10/08

Hi misty, congratulations on your gold.it was fabulous watching you compete as it has for the last 4 or 5 years that ive watched you .my niece plays indoor v-ball for seattle u. so we are always kickin around your and keris play. what an unbelievable turn of events . whod a thunk it, the best beach v-ball player in the world goes down with noneother than a torn achillies tendon. That really bites!!! But as positive as you are, im sure you will come back stronger than ever.you mentioned on the show trhat you tore your pcl,i blew my acl skiing many years ago and have had many scopes since then so i can somewhat relate. So can you handle rehab and a kid at the same time? that would be good fodder for the media hounds. ha ha what ever you decide to do . I hope you and matt enjoy the time together without driving each other nuts. haha. Cant wait to see you competing again next year. oh-ya, dont forget to STRETCH,STRETCH,STRETCH !!!!!!! Good luck big time. A fan from shelton,Mike Hale

Sue | on 8/10/08

Hi Misty – There are a lot of us pulling for you out here! You are an inspiration to so many girls – as you will be an inspiration through your recovery. My daughter tore her ACL at a tournament last year. After surgery, she had us hang your picture next to her bed to keep her motivated through her recovery. She was visibly-shaken when she heard of your ACL tear. We’re excited to hear that you will be back on the court and can’t wait to see you guys win another gold medal! All the best from Wisconsin.

Kris | on 8/10/08

Misty,
This is the first time I have ever done this but I just felt the need to tell you how much of an inspiration you have been to me. I suffered a life-changing injury in May 2006. I was trying to run a mini marathon. Something I had never tried but had recently turned 40 and wanted to give it a try. I typically love sports like VB,BB,softball and racquetball. Apparently, I had a stress fracture going on in my hip area that I was unaware of and at mile 6 had groin pain but went 3 more miles until I fractured and displaced the neck of my right femur. I had surgery immediately and after 4 or so months it became apparent that it wasn’t healing. They wanted to do hip replacement or an osteotomy but my Dr. found a doctor at Duke that does something called a Free Vascularized Fibular Graft. They took a piece of my fibula and bone grafted it and hooked up a new blood supply to the area. This helped to prevent AVN also. That healed the fracture after 3 months but because of the initial injury my leg is now 9/10th’s of an inch shorter. I was on crutches for 13 months…which lead to my latest surgery in April for rotator cuff and many other shoulder issues. I will have to say I was getting pretty depressed about everything because nothing was healing like it should. Then I watched you and Kerri in your quest for your second gold. You guys were amazing to watch. I even went out and bought a volleyball and could do about everything…though bumping didn’t feel so hot on my shoulder. Then when I found out you were going to be on DWTS I was really excited for you. You were a natural. I was so sorry to hear about your injury but I am so glad to hear you want to give it a try again. Everytime I say I want to try running the mini marathon again people either look at me like I am crazy or they out right tell me I am. Some people just don’t understand the whole competitiveness thing. I hope they invite you back to DWTS ,not only to show us your jive but to allow you to compete again.(hopefully with Maksim again!)...to finish what you started. I know seeing you and what you are going through just brought back everything to me…the whole injury and how it happened is still surreal to me. I know you will work hard to get back and it makes me want to work harder to get back and finish what I started too. I look forward to seeing you play beach volleyball again(bring home a 3rd gold!) and I look forward to seeing you back on the dance floor. Enjoy this time off with your husband. We don’t always know why things happen but there is a purpose behind it all. You have such incredible strength, courage and determination and I really admire you….you inner beauty matches your outer beauty. And I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that when you say I’LL BE BACK!!!! That you mean it!! You are in my thoughts and prayers Misty. You are truly a blessing.

Sue Fairchild | on 8/10/08

Misty – am a big fan of DWTS and followed your volleyball successes…none of which I have in common with you…but what I do have in common is a ruptured left Achilles ( was painful to watch the video and recognized the pop right away!). I have been sidelined from my hospital nursing job and had just lost my 4 legged companion…but am learning patience and drawing on my faith to keep me sane….lots of good friends and a supportive husband really help. Don’t get too discouraged during the NWB stage, It gets better, especially when you can drive and recover a little independence. I start PT this week, am anxious to re-enter life as I once knew it. I am a lap swimmer and am anxious to get back in the pool, as well. Check out the Achilles blog on line….there are lots of us out there and good to know you are not alone (as you have already probably heard from some of us already)...Take care and know that you are in our thoughts and prayers….

Toni Fitch | on 8/10/08

Misty,

Sorry to hear about your injury. I was pulling for you to take it all on DWTS. On the bright side, you and Matt will be able to spend more time together. I hope all went well with your surgery. How long will you be on the shelf? Do you have to re-hab that type of injury? Good luck and I hope to see you back on both the beach and the dance floor soon!

mark | on 8/10/08

Misty try and relax for a while and get well soon.

Jerri | on 8/10/08

I have been watching you dance and was heart broken when I learned of your injury. I feel you really had a great chance to win the competition. I am so glad that your surgery went well and wish you a speedy recovery and all the best. I just want you to know that you are my favorite athlete. It is so exciting to watch you and Keri play volleyball. I am looking forward to seeing you again , “on the court and on the dance floor”.

Best Wishes,
Jerri

Jamie Schagat | on 8/10/08

Hi Misty, So sorry to hear of your injury but glad to hear that the surgery went well for you. I became a big fan watching you in the Olympics and was thrilled to be seeing you on Dancing with the Stars. I am the same age as you but I have cerebral palsy. You have been an inspiration to me, especially how you have handled your injury – with such grace. I can’t play volleyball or dance very well, but got such enjoyment watching your performances. Much luck in your recovery and while I am at physical therapy stretching my hamstrings, hips and practicing walking, I’ll think of you working hard in PT too! Much luck and thanks for being such a fine person. Best regards, Jamie

Bryan Graves | on 8/10/08

Shocked is the word. Which contestant has ever been more fit that you?

Thank you for the pleasure your sport participation has provided our family. As Karch stated…“simply the best to ever play the game!”

I wish you speedy and complete recovery.

God bless you and your family.

We have a great picture of the whole family including Kendra sitting in a circle in the living room typing your # on their cells. Bet with every high school vb girl voting, you were getting the most votes.
Just like when you were fallig in love…two athletes in rehab.

Judy | on 8/10/08

Hi Misty,
I’m glad you are recovering well from the surgery. I was heartbroken for you and Maksim when your injury was announced. Our family has 3 phones and the votes were going for you. You were amazing on the dance floor and I really think you could have gone all the way.
And….....I got to know you for the first time via the Beijing Olympic coverage.
You and Kerri are incredible athletes and the world was cheering you on.
Congratiulations on your 2nd Gold Medal.
Take this time, which thank God is during a break in your volleyball schedule, and do what you need to do to take care of YOU!
I’ll be looking forward to updates and can’t wait to see you on your feet again..
in the sand or on the dance floor!
Best wishes,
Judy

take care

Al & Cris | on 8/10/08

Misty, glad to hear you came through the surgery OK. My wife and I are huge fans and we were shocked and sad to hear you had been injured. But I suppose a reality show is a far better place for something like this to happen than, say, I don’t know, the gold medal round in Beijing? Take some down time and get better soon. We love you!

Lisa | on 8/10/08

Misty, I’m glad the surgery went well. I have no doubt that you will be back, your determination is admirable. Have a relaxing time off with your husband.

Rick Heimbruch | on 8/10/08

Watched the Olyimics Beach Volley Ball and was supporting You and Karri taking well deserved Gold.

Sorry for your injury – hope you come back to Dancing with the Stars and show them that you dance on wood just as well as you dance on sand!

We love ya! – Hope your tendon heals stronger than before – my ACL did after my Sking accident.

Awaiting your return!

Kara | on 8/10/08

Misty, you are one incredibly tough woman! you continue to inspire me and I know many others. I know this is kind of a set back for you, but I know you will come out stronger than ever and continue to rock at everything you do!

Amy McMillan | on 8/10/08

Misty I just wanted to cry for you when you got injured. I am an athlete myself and know exactly what was going thru your mind. I am so glad you are ok and the surgery went well.

jerry | on 8/10/08

I’m not sure if you get these emails or not, but here goes. Not a big fan of DWTS in teh least and especially of Maks. Think he’s to hyped and blown over, but I can say this. I have respect for you and what you’ve accomplished on and off the BVB court. A fan of BVB, Ross and Boss my fav, sorry there, but I’ve watched with awe, everychance I could, you and Kerri play, which is the standard every team will be raised against forever. PERIOD! But I hope you rehab quickly, and I hope your wishes for a famil are not impeeded any. I liked the twinkle in your eyes when you mentioned this possibility and I think you and Matt would be great parents. Seeing someone for only 24 hours in two months is a drain, and it leaves you empty, so take this time with your husband and recover. Matt seems like a strong guy, and, well it goes without saying, your a strong woman, so enjoy this time together. In conclusion I’ll say, having stole my Arnold quote from me (See the blog) I’ll say “You shall return”. Not exactly McCarthur in teh Phillipines, but you get the idea.

Claudia | on 8/10/08

Hey Misty.
Wow I couldnt believe when I read the news of your injury, but unfortunately it turned out to be true :-(
Actually achilles rupture is like the thing I fear most, the popping sound is so scary I think and the pain looks huge – I really felt for you there….
But I am really glad to hear the surgery went smooth and you seem okay. Although I would have loved to see more of your dancing because you were just starting off so great, well hope you will recover quickly and completely which is way more important!
So take things slowly and get yourself now finally a well deserved rest – even it wasnt intended :-) Enjoy that and the time with Matt despite the injury.
Take care and I am keeping my fingers crossed to see you back!
Hugs from Germany – Claudia

Also, sorry to write this here but your ask a question box isn’t working…

but when I met you in Beijing you told me to hit you up on your site to maybe get a pin or wristband or something. I am sorry to bother you on here, but nothing would be more awesome that to get something in support of you and Kerri’s team. I already told all my friends and family how I got to meet you guys and everyone is jealous! You guys rock and made my whole experience working at the Olympics like 5 times greater! :)

Lee | on 8/10/08

Misty, I’m glad to hear the surgery went well. I thought about you today knowing that this was the day for surgery. Thanks for letting us know that you are home and getting some rest. Please keep us posted. I wish speedy and complete recoveries for you and Matt. Take care, Lee

Trinity Nelson | on 8/10/08

I am so sad that things happened like they did! You did an awesome job with the dancing and the Mambo was so sassy! haha :)

I met you this summer after the semi-finals match in Beijing (I was the young, blonde girl in the cubs hat, I think I gave you my card too) But anyways I just wanted to tell you that you are in my prayers for your fast recovery!

Jonathan Duchon | on 8/10/08

Hello, Misty.

My family and I are very happy to learn of your successful surgery. We are proud of the way you represented our great country on your Olympic voyage.

My family and I are also very proud of your dancing skills on DWTS. You showed a beauty and grace that had the quality of a angel.

I want to share a personal note with you. In January of this year, I had a severe weight problem. I weighed 560 pounds. With dedication and courage, I have changed that number. As of now, October 8, 2008, my weight is 375 pounds. My point is, I believe in you. I believe you will have a quick recovery and return to not only dominate the court, but dominate the dance floor. Perhaps you will return to DWTS in the future.

No matter what, you Misty May, will continue to be the champion we all know and treasure.

I wish you a full and fast recovery. As you stated “This marks only the beginning of a new journey…”

Rene | on 7/10/08

Misty,

Glad to hear that your surgery went well! Very sad that you are done Dancing this season. Heck, my friend and I voted for the first time for any reality show for you and Maks! The show is not the same without you guys. Your sense of humor and competitive spirit was unmatched! Best of luck with your recovery and I look forward to seeing you back in the sand and in the ballroom soon.

Lin Smith | on 7/10/08

Misty – I was devastated when I heard of your accident and cringed when I heard it! I am so sorry you had to go through this pain. I watched and cheered and screamed with joy as you and Kerry won the Gold again. I was soooo proud of you! Good luck with your recovery and also in starting your family. I think this time was meant to be for you and Matt. Spend time together, love each other and get well soon. Love you!

I am so glad your surgery went well. I know I have had probs with my achillis (sp) tendon in the past where it was swollen and it was very painful then! I missed you dancing tonight but I know you will be ok and maybe next season you can make an appearance on the show! I didn’t even know who you were til the show and you became my favorite the first week! I am so proud of you!
I am now a fan!

Ele | on 7/10/08

Hey Misty May!

Get well soon and I’ll be waiting for you to come back on the court so I can cheer you on ‘til I have no voice left and on the dancefloor where I can vote for you like crazzzy!

Tonya | on 7/10/08

Dear Misty, I am glad to hear that the surgery went well. I will continue to pray that you will have a speedy recovery. I was disappointed that your time on the show was cut short due to the injury. I was definatley pulling for you. You are a strong woman and a true inspiration to all women everywhere. You are definately a role model I want my girls to have. Take this time that you have to truly enjoy the time you have with your husband and to let your body heal. God has a plan and a reason that this happened. I hope that you will come back for another season on DWTS and you will be paired up with Mac again. Take care of yourself and GOD bless you and your husband.

Alysia | on 7/10/08

Richard | on 7/10/08

Ms May-Treanor, So sorry to hear of your injury and I can relate as I ruptured my achillies playing racquetball. The doctor said my achilles looked like two mop ends that he pulled back together sutured around them 500 times. I had the surgery on June 3, 2005 and with some great PT I rode my bicycle across Iowa during RAGBRAI the end of July with the Air Force Cycling Team. I continued my rehab after returning from Iowa and then hiked the Grand Canyon in October for six days with friends. I continue to play racquetball, referee soccer, downhill ski and run.

I know you will return from your injury all the stronger working with your doctor and physical therapist.

Prayers for a speedy recovery.

Richard

Betsy Johnson | on 7/10/08

Rafer and I are wishing you a speedy recovery. You just take some time to heal and relax. You deserve it.

Dom | on 7/10/08

Hi Misty,

I just read about your injury in the news today. I’m so sorry to hear that. You were an inspiration during the Olympics…and then Dancing With The Stars. I myself had surgery 2 months ago for a ruptured right achilles from playing softball. It was my first time in surgery so it’s a whole new experience. The first two weeks were rough…but since then, each day, things have improved. This week (week 8) was my first week without crutches…yahoo! I still can’t quite fully walk without help…so I’m wearing the soft boot to get around quicker. I’m typing this as I’m at Disneyland with my two young kids (their first time…they’re 3 1/2 and 2 1/2 years old). Walking around Disneyland with the soft boot was pretty rough on the heel…but gotta do what you gotta do when the trip was planned 6 months ago. Anyways, best wishes on a speedy recovery. Don’t rush around doing things. I felt quite helpless at times during the hard cast stage…but let people take care of you so that you’ll get a 100% recovery. Take care!

Dani | on 7/10/08

Hi Misty,

Glad to hear that your surgery went well. I had the same surgery on May 6th of this year. I’m jogging now, back into the swing of things, taking it easy. Stay strong, stay patient, and keep a sense of humor! Enjoy the down time.

Dani

Kate | on 7/10/08

You are such an inspiration and you were my number one fan on DWTS. I am so sorry about your injury, but glad to hear that you made out well in surgery and on the road to recovery. Take your time and enjoy time with your hubby! :)

Your dancing was amazing and good for competiton…

Take Care of yourself!

Daniel Yount | on 7/10/08

All is good just to know everything will be fine , thanks for the updates. you do mean a lot to many people

Casey | on 7/10/08

Hey Misty,

Great to hear the surgery was a success! I was so bummed you couldn’t have shown us how great you are at dancing but I am relieved the injury will not affect volleyball. Also, great to hear you and Matt are back together.

Hope your recovery is quick and as painless as possible. Get better soon and I can’t wait to see you dance the jive in your sneakers sometime in the future!

Judy | on 7/10/08

Hey Misty, Glad to hear that the surgery went well and you sound like you are in good spirits. I’ve been following team May/Walsh for years and I’m here to say you will be sadly missed next season.

But on the upside you and your husband will be able to spend time together and heal and of course, enjoy life and don’t forget that starting a family thing. It’s great for the healing process :]

Take care and rest so we can see you soon on DWTS and of course on the beach

Greg Hay | on 7/10/08

Misty I am so sorry for your injury, I was watching Dancing with the stars monday night and when you mentioned you were out of the competition I cried for such a long time. I hope you continue to be the awesome woman that you are. You are the best.

Amanda | on 7/10/08

Hey Misty! Glad to hear you are doing well and home with your husband. It is a tough injury (ruptured my achilles senior year in high school) but we know you’ll be back and better than ever! You handle everything with so much grace and class. Thank you for always being such an excellent role model for us all and for allowing us to be a part of your journey. Best wishes!

Andrea | on 7/10/08

As crazy as it sounds, I think injuries are sometimes divine intervention that ultimately improve people’s lives. That said, it actually hurt to hear that awful snapping sound, so I can’t imagine how it must’ve felt! Godspeed for a quick and thorough recovery (better, faster, stronger, if that’s even possible in your case) and I hope there’s a mini-Matt or mini-Misty on the sidelines when you return to the beach and the dance floor! I still want to see yours and Maks’s jive…

Andrea | on 7/10/08

Misty you were by far the best out there on the dance floor. It was sad to see you not perform monday. I was devistated but i new you wouldve rocked the floor just like u rock the sand. My vote was with you each week you are great competitor. You’ll always be the top star in my book. Hope all goes well with your recovery. :)

Mary | on 7/10/08

glad you are home and with your husband. Health care evidence based research shows that you heal faster with loved ones side-by-side.
I have been a nurse for 31 years…..but I also play beach volley ball in Pompano Beach every Wednesday night. We laugh, sweat, win, lose….but most important, we are moving the great bodies that God gave us…....our muscles and bones are made to move. Thank you for showing all women how important it is to “get out and move”......you are a great role model. Health well (and its OK to take your pain meds….don’t be afraid to take them)

Morgan | on 7/10/08

Hey Misty, I’m very glad to hear that your surgery went well. I was very sad to see you go…you were def. the best dancer on DWTS. But all time heels and I am happy that you are staying so positive in all this and look forward to you getting back out on the court and dance floor.

Abigail Ho | on 7/10/08

Misty,

Sorry to hear about your injury on DWTS, but i am glad to hear that you had a successful surgery and that everything went smoothly. I will truly miss you dancing. I was looking forward to cheering you on further, but unfortunately an injury had to occur. Looks like dancing can cause lots of injuries. Best of luck to you in your speedy recovery. I know you will come back stronger, and i hope to see you and Kerri Walsh at the 2012 olympics. Cant wait for my favorite Beach Volleyball athletes to win another gold. GO USA!

Staci | on 7/10/08

Misty, I am so sorry about your injury but happy to hear that your surgery went well! I know you will recover well and will definitely be back stronger than ever! Your determination is very inspiring to me! I look forward to seeing you get back out on the court and also back on the dance floor to do that Jive!

Thank you for updating us with your blogs — I love reading/watching them! I hope both you and Matt recover from your surgeries quickly and enjoy your time together!!

HUGS,

Staci

Monica | on 7/10/08

Misty you are a trooper. You and Maks were my golden couple for this season and it’s just not the same with you gone. I know you need to recuperate and you also have volleyball to think about, so I’ll try not to be selfish. But I can’t wait till you and Maks are back to compete. Just dancing the jive wont be enough. You’re a very talented dancer and the world should see that. God bless you, you are always in my prayers.

Amie Bokelman | on 7/10/08

Hey Misty,

My heart goes out to you as you now deal with the days ahead of recovery. I experienced a very sereal moment watching your injury occur last night on tv, before it was announced just what the diognosis was I knew exactly what had happened the second you said something about a base ball bat. It has been 7 wks since I had my surgery repairing my ruptured achilles. You’ll get a laugh out of this, guess what I was doing?? Attempting to help coach my daughters 6th grade volleyball team. (: My prayers are with you and I know you will pull through this as the slowing down the pace of life will help you reconnect with your friends, family and husband.

Much love,
Amie

Angela | on 7/10/08

Hi Misty. I’m glad to hear that your surgery went well and that you’re recovering at home with your husband, family and friends. All of your fans sure are sad that your dancing session was cut short, but I hope that you recover quickly and that we can all see you in full force soon enough! Take care!

Tina | on 7/10/08

Misty, you are such an inspiration. Thank you for putting this out there!

Renee | on 7/10/08

First, I want to start by saying that my daughter (7yrs.old) and I watch you and Kerri play volleyball whenever we can. You guys are great role models for younger girls who love the sport.
Second, I know exactly what you are going through, as I have also tore my achilles tendon early in June (playing flag football, I’m not as young as I once was…ha ha). I’m glad everything went good with the surgery and the best of luck with your recovery. I know you will come back strong, you have a great outlook on life and enjoy your time at home!!

Ginger Powden | on 7/10/08

I am a big fan of yours, and rooting for you to make a successful recovery!

Dennis | on 7/10/08

Hi Misty,

Glad to hear that your surgery went well. I hope that you take this time to rest and let your body heal.
We are all pulling for ya here. Stay strong! We can all relate to what you are going through as all 200+ of us are all going through the same ATR recovery on AchillesBlog. You’ll be playing Vball and Jiving in due time. I am back to tennis and basketball after 8 months. :)
We sent you an AchillesBlog T-shirt to your fan mail address. We hope you like it. :)

Misty I am glad you are ok. I know you will come back even stronger!!! You are so amazing and you have the right attitude to continue a strong and loved life. =)

Jill | on 7/10/08

Hi Misty~ So sorry to hear of your injury! In May I partially tore my peronus longus tendon and sprained/strained both achilles tendons (even though I swore they were ruptered). I was in a wheelchair for 9 weeks and thought they were healing. I’m now getting the same feeling of pain and deep burning on them, so I am not sure what’s going on with them. After your achilles heals a bit, what kinds of exercises is your Dr. going to have you do? I hope you heal super fast! I know your pain-I have a lot going on with my feet. Ug! Take care, Jill

Stacy | on 7/10/08
